The coach from Istanbul to Tehran is one of the longest scheduled bus journeys you can buy a single ticket for: roughly 2,400 kilometres across the whole of Anatolia, over the Turkish–Iranian border and down through Tabriz to the Iranian capital. Here is what the journey involves, how long it really takes, and how to make it comfortable.
How long does it take?
Plan for 38 to 45 hours door to door. The timetable distance is around 38 hours, but the border crossing at Gürbulak–Bazargan can add anything from one hour to five depending on the day, the season and how many coaches arrive at the same time. Coaches leave Istanbul in the early afternoon and, after two nights on board, arrive in Tehran early in the morning of the third day.
Remember the clock change: Iran is 30 minutes ahead of Turkey, so arrival times on the Iranian side are shown in Iranian local time.
The route
Most services follow the same trunk road, with scheduled stops where passengers can board or leave:
- Istanbul (Esenler coach station) → Ankara (about 6 to 7 hours)
- Ankara → Sivas → Erzurum (overnight, the coach climbs onto the eastern plateau)
- Erzurum → Ağrı → Gürbulak border (beneath Mount Ararat)
- Bazargan → Maku → Khoy → Tabriz (the first big Iranian city, around 30 hours in)
- Tabriz → Zanjan → Qazvin → Karaj → Tehran (West Terminal)
Because the coach stops in all of these cities, you can book any section of it. Istanbul to Tabriz, Ankara to Tehran and Erzurum to Tabriz are all sold as ordinary tickets on the same departure. Use the route search to see the pairs we sell.
What happens at the border
Everyone leaves the coach with all of their luggage. On the Turkish side you pass exit control; you then walk or are driven the short distance to the Iranian post at Bazargan for passport control and customs. Officers may open bags. Once the whole coach has cleared, the journey continues. Keep your passport, visa printout and ticket in a pocket, not in the hold luggage, and have a pen for any forms.
There is no visa on arrival at the land border. Whatever your nationality, the visa question must be settled before you travel. Our guide to documents for the Turkey–Iran bus covers it in detail.
What the coaches are like
International services on this route are usually VIP coaches with three seats per row (two on one side of the aisle, one on the other), wide reclining seats, air conditioning and a toilet. Water and a snack are normally included, and the driver stops every few hours at roadside restaurants where you can buy a proper meal. Stops are short; stay close to the coach and keep an eye on the time.
Bring a neck pillow, a light blanket or shawl, a power bank, earplugs and an eye mask. Dress in layers: the plateau around Erzurum is cold at night even in summer, and the coach heating or cooling will not suit everyone.
Money, phones and practicalities
- Cash. Foreign bank cards do not work in Iran. Carry euros or US dollars in cash and change a small amount at the border or in Tabriz for the first day. Iranian tourist payment cards can be arranged on arrival in larger cities.
- Phone. Turkish SIM cards stop working at the border. Iranian SIM cards are sold at the border and in every city; bring your passport to register one.
- Luggage. Allowances are generous compared with flights, which is one reason families choose the coach. Confirm the exact allowance on your ticket and label every bag.
- Food. Rest-stop restaurants accept Turkish lira in Turkey and Iranian rial in Iran. Carry some snacks for the night sections.
Who takes this bus?
Iranians living in Europe flying into Istanbul and continuing home by road, students moving between the two countries, traders with heavy luggage, and overland travellers who want to see the country rather than fly over it. For many of our customers the ticket is bought by a relative in Spain or elsewhere in Europe for a passenger who boards in Istanbul: see how to buy a ticket for a relative.
